Our Facilities
Wanaka Bakpaka offers an amazing lakefront location with stunning views, providing guests with an authentic Kiwi lodging experience that dates back to 1960. Recently renovated, the property blends its rich history with modern budget comforts. Conveniently located just a 5–10 minute stroll from the town centre, the Backpacker is close to all bars, restaurants, cafés, and shops—making it an ideal base for exploring Wanaka.
Our Reception
Reception is open seven days a week from 8:30am to 7:00pm. After the office closes, a staff member remains on-site to assist with any issues and to ensure shared areas, including the kitchen, are kept clean and well maintained for everyone.
Kitchen
The modern, well-equipped kitchen is designed for our guests’ convenience and comfort. Labels and baskets are provided for storing food in the fridge, and guests are kindly asked not to place chill bags in the fridges as they take up excessive space. A freezer is available in the laundry, and labels should also be used when storing food there. Cubbyholes are provided for dry food, with additional storage space located under the sinks.
Complimentary tea, coffee, and sugar are available in the kitchen and are replenished daily in the morning. For safety reasons, the ovens automatically switch off at 11:00pm. There are two ovens for baking, a gas BBQ, a BBQ table, and fresh herbs available from the garden, creating a fabulous space for shared meals and socialising.
Lounge
With beautiful views of the lake, the cosy lounge is a welcoming space for guests to relax and unwind. It features a fireplace, musical instruments, magazines, and a quality book exchange where guests can swap their own books for others, along with a selection of games for shared enjoyment.
Car Park
Wanaka Bakpaka offers a free, large on-site car park with space for up to 30 vehicles, providing convenient and secure parking for guests.
Laundry
The laundry facilities include two washing machines and three dryers for guest use for free. To minimise noise for nearby rooms, the laundry automatically shuts off at 10:30pm.
